Takaram

Tukaram was affected by bilateral cataract. The blurred vision affected him so badly that he was unable to indulge in any activities, let alone livelihood work. Through a CBM project, Tukaram got his vision restored.

Tukaram is a-45-year-old daily wage labourer who lives with his wife Shashikala, 40, and their two children—son James, 22 and daughter Rita 18. They live in a small house made up of tin sheets in Baridabad taluk, Bidar district, Karnataka. He also takes care of his 75 year old mother-in-law, Narasamma.

They were a happy family, although poor and hardworking. As days went by, Tukaram began to notice that his eyesight was becoming dimmer and dimmer. And it reached a stage when he could no longer go for his daily wage work, and found himself depending more and more on his family for his day-to-day activities.

Help reaches from CBM Project

At this juncture, CBM project conducted a camp in Bagdal. James made the most of this opportunity and took his father to the camp for a check up. There the doctors diagnosed that Tukaram had bilateral cataract. The project team organised transport to all the patients, 26 of them, diagnosed with cataract, including Tukaram, and took them to the base hospital which is 20 kilometres from this village for cataract surgery.

After cataract surgery

Tukaram’s joy knew no bounds when he gained vision in both eyes after a year-long struggle! Though modest, Tukaram’s income meant a lot to his family. They went through hard times when he was not working. They had depended solely on government’s BPL (Below Poverty Line) programme for food. Now he not only does his day-to-day activities without anybody’s help, he has also got back to work and started earning for his family. Tukaram thanked CBM project for the timely intervention!
