Need for Industry Involvement in Employment of Persons with Disabilities

Roundtable Conference

A roundtable conference was organised in Ahmedabad - Gujarat, first in a series of roundtable conferences which CBM and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry have initiated in partnership to advocate for equal opportunities to persons with disabilities.

Partnering with FICCI

The need for organising such a conference is to develop synergy between development sector and Corporates in India. Comprehensive Development and Inclusive growth is impossible without the partnership between Corporates, Civil Society and Government.

A platform which brought major stakeholders in development together has helped CBM to address issues of Inclusion to much broader audience.

Highlights of the conference

  • Employing persons with disabilities in Industry/Corporate can be seen either as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility or a simple talent management acquisition policy where an employer recognizes the potential of prospective employee and provide necessary support for development.

  • The opportunities of creating micro enterprises through Corporate Social Responsibility should be promoted thereby providing more opportunities to persons with disabilities were discussed.

  • A concern which the industry representatives raised during the discussions was about poor skills and qualifications of persons with disabilities. However, persons with disabilities, DPOs and some corporates pushed the fact that developing skilled man power is also a responsibility of corporates without denying the fact that persons with disabilities should also seek every opportunity to develop their skills.

  • The civil society representatives raised a concern about equal opportunities in rural settings as this sometimes in focused in urban areas. The ensure that growth is inclusive, comprehensive and sustainable; these issues have to be addressed.

  • As a follow up of this workshop, CBM has proposed workshops on Inclusive Development for corporates, developing Workplace Intervention Programmes and defining a corporate responsibility strategy which promotes inclusive development.
