Regional Meeting on Inclusion of Children with Disabilities

CBM, in partnership with the Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru, organized a one-day forum in Bangalore on the 15th of February, where representatives from State Education Departments of four states and one union territory, SCERT and partner NGO deliberated on promoting inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream schools.

The forum highlighted the importance of sensitizing teachers about the needs of children with disabilities so they can positively respond to those needs in classrooms and ensure quality education. Speakers also encouraged inter and intra collaborations between government and non-governmental organizations in promoting inclusion in schools through resourceful provisions, services and schemes.

Representatives from The Teacher Foundation, one of CBM’s partners, led lively group discussions on education modules that would help teachers to keep students with and without disabilities engaged in their lessons. The day concluded with participants developing state wise action plans for teacher training and promoting inclusion and quality education to be implemented effective 2018-19.

Dr. T. D. Dhariyal, Commissioner, Disabilities, Govt. of N.C.T of Delhi, who actively participated in the sessions said - “As a commissioner for persons with disabilities in Delhi, I have seen the ground realities of inclusive education. I am always concerned about inclusion in quality education, which should be available for both people with and without disabilities. I believe that the collaboration between CBM and Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru, can serve the purpose of spreading quality education to children with disabilities in the entire country.”

The event is a step forward in contributing to the realization of the 4th UN Sustainable Development Goal on Education, United Nations Convention on Rights of Children with Disabilities, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
