Working tirelessly for the prevention and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, particularly for the poor and rural population has always been a high priority for CBM and its partners. Recently, CBM received a helping hand from the Cognizant Foundation which supported the cause by providing a Laureate Phaco Machine, a high-tech equipment used for the cataract surgeries.

According to Government of India survey, around 87% of the total population in the Hubli district in Karnataka is living below the poverty line with agriculture as their primary occupation. These people are directly exposed to the UV rays in the field which leads to the development of cataract. Most of them do not have awareness and access to essential health care services, leading to blindness in most of the cases, which could have been avoided.

The Phaco machine donated by Cognizant Foundation has been installed in CBM's partner organization, Vision Eye Hospital, Hubli. Now the rural population of northern Karnataka has access to the latest technology in cataract surgeries. The communities benefiting from the service are from Hubli, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Bellary, Koppal, Raichur, Shimoga, Belgaum and Chitradurga districts.
“Before having Phaco installed, we used to refer the patients to other hospitals where cataract surgery was expensive for poor and middle class family. We were not sure whether they underwent surgery at a affordable price. But now with the support of Cognizant Foundation and CBM, we are equipped with the latest technologies to assist most deserving population.” - Dr. Joseph, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Vision Eye Hospital, Hubli.
Since the machine was commissioned in December 2013, Vision Eye Hospital has performed 1,278 cataract surgeries, including 223 with the support of phaco. The sophisticated equipment will continue to be in service for the next 5 to six years.

Our hearty thanks to Cognizant Foundation for their generous support to the cause with Laureate Phaco Machine, that is helping to restore vision to thousands of people.
