CBM’s Include Vidya Campaign - Kolkata

On September 19, 2014 CBM flagged off its nationwide inclusive education campaign in Kolkata. The primary objective of the campaign is to include children with disabilities in education in India.

The Indian army’s 'Towering Twelfth' supported CBM’s Include Vidya campaign
CBM India has partnered with Prerana Educational Centre to lead the Include Vidya campaign in Kolkata. The event started with the 'Walkathon' that was flagged off by Prof. Bharati Ray,  Vice President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Ex Pro Vice Chancellor, Kolkata University from ‘Fountain of Joy’ and ended ‘Rabindra Sadan.’ Around 500 persons, including 250 children with disabilities along with those from mainstream and special schools and other NGOs participated in the event. The Indian army’s 12 Garhwal Rifles, known as the 'Towering Twelfth' supported the cause by sending their band, adding colours and spirit to the events.

An enthralling event followed at Rabindra Sadan that witnessed speeches made by Shri Niloy Roy Dy. Director of Education, Govt. of West Bengal and Ms. Mita Banerjee, Commissioner Disabilities Govt. of West Bengal. The officials assured their support and expressed willingness to work with CBM and its partner in developing an efficient inclusive education system in West Bengal in the near future.

Ms. Fairlene Soji from CBM India and Ms. Gangotri Chakraborty, from Prerana Educational Centre also spoke on the topic of “inclusive education” for children with disabilities. Students of Prerana education centre enacted a skit in Bangla to present the day to day challenges faced by children with disabilities. The participating children with disabilities also played the ancient Indian game ‘snake and ladder’ to demonstrate the threats and opportunities they face in the current school system.

The recommendations for developing an inclusive education system in the state were handed over to Shri Niloy Roy and Ms. Mita Banerjee. 

Report in Regional channel DD Bangla

On September 19, 2014 CBM flagged off national wide inclusive education campaign in Kolkata. The primary objective of the campaign is to include children with disabilities in education in India. The Government owned regional channel DD Bangla reported this event in the news section on the same day.

There was wide coverage in local and regional media. DD Bangla reported the campaign on the same day, and ATN Bangla news channel reported the news on September 20, 2014. Around eight newspapers covered the event and helped to spread the message on inclusive education across West Bengal.

State level events - West Bengal

CBM India was conducting district level events from 9th September, 2014 in Balurghat-Dakhin Dinajpur District and Siliguri-Darjeeling District of West Bengal. All activates were planned around the central theme “Inclusive Education.” District Magistrate/Sub-divisional Officer, Additional Executive officer, Inclusive Education for the Disabled (IED) Coordinators and School Inspectors were among the government officials who took active part in the events. Special Educators, Teachers, children with disabilities, mainstream school students and volunteers also actively participated in the event and made it a great success.
