The number of children with disability between the age of 5 – 10 in India is estimated to be 2.36 million, but only 1.72 million are enrolled in elementary school.  The District Information on School Education (DISE) reports that the proportion of enrolment of children with disabilities at primary level to total enrolment was 1.18% and dropped to 0.90% for upper primary level in 2012-13.

This lack of attention to children with disabilities will also keep India away from achieving the MDG2 - Universal primary education. The various barriers children with disabilities face in enrolling and continuing in school are physical accessibility, trained teachers, study materials, and attitudinal barriers.

About include vidya campaign

Include Vidya” – CBM’s campaign to include children with disabilities in education in India  aims to highlight the profound challenges faced by children with disabilities in realizing their right to education. By raising awareness and visibility of the widespread exclusion of disabled children from education, the campaign hopes to influence governments and policy makers to make greater commitments towards inclusive education. Tackling the challenges, and severe discrimination, faced by children with disabilities, is a matter of urgency.

The campaign complements the government’s flagship programme – Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), to achieve its goal of ‘Education for All.’ Children with disability should have equal rights to access education. This goes beyond enrolment to active learning. Participation in the classroom as well as playing fields and other extra-curricular activities.
