Hearing impaired can excel in all fields

Third Indian deaf expo 2012 brought more than 1000 persons with hearing impairment, including delegates from abroad, together to tackle the different challenges they face. The purpose of this conference was to create awareness amongst public about the deaf culture and showcase advancement in modern technology that supports persons with hearing impairment.

The conference also provided a platform for leading deaf artists to showcase their talents. Their performance showcased the talents, abilities and potential of people with hearing impairment.

Third Indian Deaf Expo 2012

Third Indian deaf expo 2012 was an international conference organized by deaf leaders with the support of CBM India. The conference brought more than 1000 persons with hearing impairment, including delegates from abroad,together to discuss the various challenges they face. The entire expo was managed by persons with hearing impairment, and it was held at Mumbai on 29th and 30th December 2012.

The purpose of the conference was to create awareness amongst the public about the deaf culture and advancement in modern technology that helps children and persons with hearing impairment in education and rehabilitation.

Issues faced by persons with hearing impairment

  • Equal respect for persons with hearing impairment in society.
  • Advocate for developments in higher education for the hearing impaired.
  • Promote sign language research as the natural means of communication.
  • Create awareness / promoting a positive attitude towards the deaf.
  • Empower women with hearing impairment.
  • Adopt technologies for accessible communication.
  • Sensitise the government to bring unique laws to empower the deaf.

Showcasing talents of deaf artists

This conference provided a platform to leading deaf artists from different parts of India and abroad to showcase their talents. Artists performed various cultural programs including mime, drama, dance and screened movies, directed and produced by persons with hearing impairment. Their performance showcased the talents, abilities and potential of persons with hearing impairment.

The conference concluded with a belief that ‘With Proper Quality Education, Provision of Devices and support from Community, the Deaf can excel in all fields’.
