CBR workshop for Odisha government officials

CBM India, in coordination with Directorate of Disability, Government of Odisha organised a workshop from October 27 – 29, 2014 on community-based rehabilitation (CBR)in Konarak, Orissa. The aim of the workshop is to bring a common understanding among duty bearers on disability issues and share knowledge on WHO CBR guidelines.

The workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Kasturi Mohapatra, State commissioner for person with Disability and Dr.Sara Varughese, National Director CBM India. The other delegates present were Dr. Ratnesh Kumar, Director and In-charge CRC, Lucknow, Department of Disability Affairs, Govt. of India and Dr. Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik, Director of Disability, Government of Odisha.

In the three day workshop, the experts shared their views and experience in developing, testing and implementing the CBR approach. The 75 participants carefully analysed various components of CBR guidelines and CBR matrix. They discussed the benefits of the CBR approach in  addressing the issues of persons with disabilities and the scope of  implementing inclusive community development programmes.
Mr. Sri. Saswat Mishra, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Women and Child Development Department, Government of Odisha said “As duty bearers and NGOs we should work to ensure that persons with disabilities can lead a dignified life in society.” 

Way forward

The government officials thanked CBM India for organising the workshop and sharing knowledge on Community Based Rehabilitation approach. The senior officials said that the government shall discuss the possibility of  developing a single window system to help persons with disabilities. CBM India is also looking forward to working closely with government of Odisha in developing projects for persons with disabilities.
