Advocating for disability studies in higher education

On November 30, 2013, CBM organised a consultation programme to facilitate inclusion of Disability management in educational institutions. On the occasion, University of Mysore and Philomena Autonomous College have expressed interest to include disability Management in their education curriculum.

The Consultation Programme

On November 30, 2013, CBM in partnership with Bharathiar University and University of Mysore organised a consultation programme to develop a curriculum on Disability management. University of Mysore hosted the initiative. The main objective of this consultation was to develop a syllabus on Disability management to equip students with adequate insight in the area of rights and needs of children and adults with disabilities.

Around 45 academicians from eight different educational institutions made significant contributions to the curriculum. The participants explored the means and ways to include the subject of disability in the syllabus. The members appreciated the efforts of the organisers and endorsed the need to have Disability management in the curriculum, as the students will be placed in different settings like hospitals, educational institutions and development organisations.

Since the year 2010, with the support of CBM, Bharathiyar University has included Disability management as a subject in the following courses: Bachelor of Social Work, Master in Social Work, M Phil & PhD., Master of Arts - Tamil, Bachelor of Physical Education and Master of Physical Education. Every year around 1500 students graduate from the university and affiliated institutions with a strong knowledge on disability management.

The outcome

On the occasion, University of Mysore and Philomena Autonomous College expressed an interest to include Disability management in their Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Work programmes in the following academic year. Through similar initiatives, CBM will try to bridge the gap in the need of development professionals with strong knowledge in the field of disabilities. CBM celebrates the outcome of this consultancy and cherishes the association with these educational institutions.
